Between August 3rd and 7th, Finland introduces its national sport Pesäpallo to us. It is a bat-and-ball game that derives from American baseball. Finland has its own twist on a number of distinctive elements of baseball:

• the pitching is done vertically
• the field is long and slender
• the bases form a zigzag shape
• you may not strike the ball over the lines (a homerun is therefore detrimental for the hitting team)
• after a strike you do not necessarily have to run

An entertaining game that will open the eyes of many people this upcoming summer. Pesäpallo is a good example of how a game variation can become a national sport.
